Williams Family, Grand Lake Sports Center Legacy Runs Deep Through Three Generations

Sam Williams is the owner and operator of Grand Lake Sports Center in Grove, Oklahoma, where he has overseen day-to-day operations since 2007 while continuing a proud family legacy that has served this area for generations.
The past, present and future of this operation are woven through three generations of Williams’ family members, and Sam counts it an honor to continue in the footsteps of his grandfather, Sam Williams, and father, Dave Williams, while helping guide the business forward.
Sam says, “Grand Lake Sports Center has always represented far more than a business for the Williams family. It has been a way to serve the community, build lasting relationships and help families enjoy everything Grand Lake has to offer.”
Over the years, Sam says, the store has become a place where people gathered for supplies, conversation, advice and connection.
Helping people create memories on the lake, spend time outdoors with their families and enjoy the Grand Lake lifestyle has always been at the heart of what the business is all about. He says that purpose and sense of community involvement is what has kept the family passionate about this business generation after generation.
“None of what Grand Lake Sports Center has become over the years would have been possible without the support of our family,” Sam says. “I’m especially thankful to my wife (Patti Williams), who has stood faithfully by my side through many seasons of building and growing the business.
“Running a long-standing family business takes countless hours, sacrifice, perseverance and dedication. I’m deeply grateful for the love, support and encouragement of my wife throughout this journey.”
Sam is a firm believer that a strong love, commitment and shared belief in the importance of family and community continues to be a big part of the heart behind this business today.
While familiarity with the Williams family and how they operate the business is appealing, the wide-ranging merchandise also attracts customers to Grand Lake Sports Center, where it’s all about finding gear to help make an adventure with Mother Nature exciting and enjoyable.
The store carries everything from fishing tackle and supplies to marine and boating essentials, as well as a variety of sports equipment, outdoor apparel, souvenirs, hunting-related accessories and seasonal lake necessities.
“The Sports Center offers knowledge and experience,” Sam says. “Customers often stop in not just for the products, but for local fishing reports, lake conditions, boating advice, seasonal recommendations and honest guidance from people who genuinely know and love the area. They like to come in for a good laugh, too.”
Sam believes Grand Lake Sports Center continues to be a destination because people know they are going to be welcome through the door. He said the business has always focused on relationships, customer service and treating people the right way.
“Many customers have been visiting the store for decades and now bring their children and grandchildren with them,” Sam says. “That kind of loyalty comes from building trust over time and staying connected to the community.

“The store has also continued evolving with the times, while still holding onto the values and small-town atmosphere that people appreciate. That combination of tradition, knowledge and genuine customer care is what keeps people coming back year after year.”
Sam says Grand Lake Sports Center has stood the test of time and continued to thrive because the business was built on relationships and hard work from the beginning.
“Over the years, the store has changed and evolved with the times but the heart behind it has always stayed the same. Customers know they can come inside, ask questions, get real advice and talk to people who genuinely care about the lake and this community.”
Sam is excited to have his daughter, Krystal Williams, involved in helping shape the future of Grand Lake Sports Center. Their shared vision is focused on bringing the business into a modern era through technology, digital media, community storytelling and new ways of connecting with locals and visitors who love Grand Lake.
“Along with expanding the store’s online presence to projects like the Grand Lake Sports Center Rodcast (fishing and lake-life podcast/video series), the goal is to create something future generations can continue growing,” Sam says. “We also want to stay true to the values and foundation that this was built on all those years ago.
“It’s a balance. While we want to preserve the heart of the store and the relationships that have made it special for decades, it’s important that we continue evolving with the times and prepare this business for the next generation.”
There’s something deeply meaningful to Sam about watching the next generation step forward with fresh ideas while holding onto the same values of hard work, community, family and customer relationships that have defined Grand Lake Sports Center. Seeing this business continue as a family legacy is one of the things that makes him most proud and hopeful moving forward.
“Carrying on the family legacy is something I do not take lightly. I understand the sacrifices and hard work that built this business, and continuing that tradition while helping shape its future is a true blessing.”
As he considers what has made it all so gratifying, Sam says, “The greatest reward is knowing the business has played a role in generations of family memories on the lake, from helping kids catch their first fish to preparing families for weekends spent together outdoors.
“There’s such a strong connection to the people of this area and the community. That’s what continues to drive my passion for this business every day.
“It’s about helping people make memories. Grand Lake is part of people’s lives, their vacations, their family traditions and their stories. Being a small part of that is what makes it all worthwhile.”
