The ROCC, Community Partnership of the Ozarks Team Up for Monthly Programs

Partnering with Community Foundation of the Ozarks, The Recovery Outreach Community Center (ROCC) is hosting a monthly program focusing on youth support and prevention.

At a monthly meeting of the Drug Endangered Children’s Coalition, Teddy Steen, executive director of The ROCC, was approached by Kylie Poor, Community Foundation of the Ozarks prevention specialist, about hosting monthly informational meetings on different topics related to prevention. A partnership was formed, and the first program is March 9 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m., with future programs being presented the second Monday of the month.

“We are testing it out and see where it goes,” Steen said. “Anybody is welcome, and I hope to get people there.”

March’s program is focusing on the prevention of suicide. Under the guidance of the QPR Institute, their mission is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors. Poor will present a program on becoming a QPR gatekeeper. Anybody can be a gatekeeper, from parents, teachers, ministers and youth to doctors, first responders and mental health professionals. The goal is to recognize the crises and warning signs that someone may be contemplating suicide.

From a flyer about the QPR Institute:

As a certified QPR gatekeeper, you will learn to:

1.    Recognize the warning signs of suicide.

2.    Increase awareness of stigma and understand suicide as a public health issue.

3.    Know how to offer hope.

4.    Know how to access local and national referral resources.

5.    Know how to get help and save a life.

Different topics will be presented each month with the focus on prevention of various issues and youth support. Community Foundation of the Ozarks is also hosting a mental health first aid training. Information about the training can be found at Mental Health First Aid Flyer.

“It could be a hit and miss, but we are giving it a shot to see what happens,” Steen said. “I would like to see it get traction. We will put the events on our monthly calendar and anybody can sign up to receive the calendar. You can call, email or go to our website to get signed up or find out what is on the calendar.”
