Connect2Culture Presents … A Neil Diamond Tribute April 25

I dare you not to sing along when The Killer Vees bring “I Am, He Said: A Celebration of the Music of Neil Diamond” to the stage. The concert features songs audiences know by heart.

The show is led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Matt Vee, who performs alongside his cousins Jeff and Tommy Vee, the sons of pop icon Bobby Vee. Together with family members and friends, they make up The Killer Vees.

Interest in Neil Diamond’s music has also seen a recent boost from the film “Song Sung Blue,” which tells the story of a Neil Diamond tribute performer. The movie introduced many viewers to Diamond’s music and reminded longtime fans just how recognizable the songs remain.

Tommy Vee is quick to point out that this performance is not meant to be a traditional tribute show.

“This is a celebration of an amazing musical icon, one we all love and respect,” he said. “We have recruited an incredible group of singers and players and have gone back to the original records. It is all about the vocals, and Matt nails it. It’s a rockin’ show.”

Julie Velline sings vocals, Bennett Vee plays lead guitar, George Maurer is on keyboards, Dennis Kennedy plays percussion and Richard Manik performs on saxophone, flute and vocals. Together, they join Matt, Jeff and Tommy Vee on stage as the full band behind the show.

The concert will include the best-known songs of Diamond’s career, which lasted over five decades. Hits like “Cracklin’ Rosie,” “Song Sung Blue,” “America” and “Sweet Caroline” helped him sell more than 100 million records worldwide.

Neil Diamond began his career in the mid-1960s, writing songs in New York’s Tin Pan Alley. Early in his career, he wrote hits for other artists before his own recordings made him one of the most recognizable voices in popular music. His songs were recorded by artists ranging from Elvis Presley to The Monkees, whose version of “I’m A Believer” became a number one hit. Over time, Diamond built a catalog that crossed generations and musical styles.
