Whitney Dushane: STEAM

Whitney Dushane, a seventh-grade math teacher at Seneca Junior High, leads STEAM projects that help students develop creativity and critical thinking. She loves showing students how things work and connecting lessons to real-world scenarios. Dushane believes STEAM gives students valuable hands-on experiences not often possible in regular classrooms.

As a Seneca Junior High School seventh grade math teacher who leads STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) projects, Whitney Dushane is confident this program “helps students develop creativity and critical-thinking skills.

“It makes them think outside the box. All of these skills are essential in developing students to go out into the real world and make a difference.”

Dushane contends students find STEAM rewarding as they’re “able to create new things or figure out why or how something works.

“In the normal core classroom, there’s not a ton of time to spend on projects and hands-on activities. STEAM gives students the opportunity to perform these activities and develop those projects.”

In expressing what she enjoys most about teaching STEAM, Dushane emphasizes, “I love the fact that I get to show students how and why something works. I also love how I can relate certain topics to real-world scenarios, so students see where they will use this stuff in the future.”
