Ten years ago, Julie Reams could barely run a mile — now she’s completed seven marathons, countless 5k races, and epic 200-mile relay runs across the country. What started as a leap out of her comfort zone turned into a lifelong passion for running, driven by determination, her kids’ cheers, and a growing love for the sport. Her journey proves that with grit and consistency, anyone — even a self-proclaimed non-athlete — can become a runner.

Makayla and Micky Wittenmyer celebrated their wedding on November 9, 2019, at the elegant Sterling Event Center, surrounded by family, friends, and heartfelt vows. The couple, who dated for seven years after reconnecting post-high school, created a day full of love, laughter, and personal touches — from a surprise stadium proposal to a handcrafted flower wall. Their once-in-a-lifetime love was honored with a beautiful ceremony and joyful reception.

Jodi Garner found running to be therapeutic and a way to stay grounded, turning her casual hobby into a passion after training for a triathlon event. Even through pregnancy and motherhood, she balances family, work, and training while embracing flexibility and self-compassion. Her upcoming goals include a half-Ironman and setting a personal record at the Joplin Memorial Half-Marathon.

Joplin Schools quickly adapted to provide free curbside and bus-delivered meals to students and families during COVID-19 school closures, preparing around 30,000 meals weekly. Their nutrition staff, including 89 dedicated workers, organize meal pickups at multiple school locations and deliver to community bus stops and special education routes. The program ensures continued nourishment for kids while prioritizing safety and minimizing contact.

Joplin Empire Market offers fresh, locally grown produce, baked goods, and meats sourced within 150 miles. During COVID-19, it shifted to online ordering with curbside pickup. Shopping local supports community farmers and reduces environmental impact.

Leigh Kelley found a passion for running after starting with a half-marathon in 2010 and joining a supportive running group called the “Yayas.” After severe nerve issues left her with foot drop, she faced a difficult recovery but persevered with rehab and a specialized brace. Today, Kelley continues to run, inspire others with similar challenges, and steadily improves her race times despite the obstacles.

Joe Davis became an unexpected local historian through his volunteer work scanning photos and researching Lamar’s history for the Barton County Historical Society. He now writes articles about the town’s past and leads efforts to transform the old Barton County Memorial Hospital site into a memorial park honoring WWII veterans. Passionate about preserving Lamar’s heritage, Davis continues to uncover stories and share them with the community.

Wade and Tyffanie run Blacklist Ink and Blacklist Laser in Joplin, offering tattoo artistry alongside tattoo removal and skincare services, which allows them to collaborate closely and provide comprehensive client care. They met through the tattoo community, married in 2014, and now have three young children while balancing family life and business growth. Their relationship thrives on realistic expectations, shared goals, and celebrating small daily “sparks” amid the challenges of running a business and raising a family.
