Former US Marine Laura Wright turned to writing and painting as therapy after being diagnosed with PTSD following two tours in Iraq, creating the Brave Mee children's book series that explores anxiety and stress through a gender-neutral character and animal guides. Wright both authors and illustrates the books to help children cope with negative feelings while empowering them to focus on positive aspects of life, with her artwork also displayed at Art Forms Gallery in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Starting June 1, 2021, Joplin Regional Airport launched new United Airlines daily service to three major hubs—Chicago, Denver, and Houston—through the Essential Air Service program with federal subsidies. The 50-seat regional jet flights offer competitive pricing and convenience compared to regional alternatives, providing critical connectivity for business travelers and economic development while making Joplin attractive to companies seeking accessible air service for parts, people, and business connections.

After meeting over chips and salsa at a Kansas City restaurant in 2018 and getting engaged at the mayor's Christmas tree in 2019, Spencer and Kaitlin adapted their wedding plans during the pandemic by reducing their guest list by 60% but still celebrated beautifully on August 22, 2020. Their rustic outdoor ceremony took place at Hidden Grace venue in Missouri (owned by Spencer's parents), featuring a chapel pergola surrounded by oak trees, followed by a COVID-safe reception with masks, separated tables, and a spectacular fireworks show.

The 19th Annual Show Me The Ozarks Baby Contest featured an array of adorable entries, all supporting the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. First place went to Lennon Kate Sullivan, a joyful 10-month-old nicknamed “Lemon Cake” by her brother. Braelynn Landis, a happy 19-month-old who loves spaghetti and dancing, took second, while smiley 8-month-old Bodhi Hobbs, proud fifth-generation family member, earned third. “Owen the Omazing” was voted Facebook Fan Favorite, and several other cuties received honorable mentions for their charm and big personalities.

The Joplin Celebration Commission is preparing for major events, including Joplin’s 150th anniversary in 2022–2023. They’re selling purple iris-shaped cookie cutters—honoring the city’s official flower—to fund the celebrations. Iris plantings and a garden tour are planned, and residents are invited to join in celebrating Joplin’s history.
